In line with the recommendation of the CNRS Scientific Council, EDMH doctoral students are asked not to submit articles to journals that require payment of a publication fee (“APC”) for the article to be “Gold Open access”. It is also important not to exceed the maximum length allowed by certain journals, failing which you will be asked to pay for the excess. EDMH will not cover publication costs.

Doctoral training
This section describes doctoral training and follow-up operations for doctoral students other than those provided by thesis directors or teams of research supervisors.
During your 3-year thesis at EDMH, you must validate
- 12 disciplinary training points (60 hours): participation in conferences, schools, M2 courses on the research topic, etc.
- 12 cross-disciplinary training points (i.e. 60 hours): any type of training not directly related to the research project (professional development, company forums, mentoring, doctoral student seminars, etc.), including the 4 compulsory training courses below.
If some training courses have not been converted into points (this is the case for courses registered before September 2021), you can easily do the conversion yourself using the table below. If in doubt, check with your thesis director or deputy director, or write to edmh@fondation-hadamard.fr.

How to register your courses in ADUM
♦ Catalogued training courses
Your ADUM account gives you access to the catalog of doctoral training courses, mainly cross-disciplinary, offered by your institution (UP Saclay or IP Paris or PSL) and by EDMH. This catalog is constantly evolving. In fact, you can ask edmh@fondation-hadamard.fr to add courses to the catalog that may be of interest to other doctoral students (e.g. seminars).
♦ Non-catalog training courses
If you would like to take part in a training course that is not listed in the catalog, you can register it in your personal account as a “non-catalogue training course” by attaching proof of attendance (see certificate of attendance above). The assessment in terms of number of days/hours/points will be validated by the EDMH management committee. The scale above will help you count your points.
♦ Each training course, wether included in the catalog or not, must specify
- The number of training hours/points
- Training category
- The type of skills involved in the training, from among the 6 proposed “skill blocks”. These skills, completed as they are acquired, will be grouped together in each doctoral student's “skills portfolio”. This portfolio will reflect the skills acquired during the thesis (optional but recommended).
- Training objectives (optional but recommended)
Mandatory training
The national doctoral decree requires all doctoral students in France to attend training on the following 4 topics:
- Research ethics and scientific integrity
- Open science issues (data management, intellectual property rights, ethics of scientific publication, etc.)
- Sustainable development
- Sexist and sexual violence (since January 2024)
These training courses are available in the ADUM catalog. If this is not the case, it is possible to take them externally (on a MOOC, for example). In this case, you need to register the course on the “off-catalog training” module, attaching proof of participation.

MathTech Course
The FMJH, in collaboration with EDMH, offers a training program to develop cross-disciplinary skills, specifically designed for EDMH doctoral students. To do so, it is drawing on the expertise of the training firm IWIPS.
Why develop cross-disciplinary training ?
- enhance the value of what you do by knowing how to better “sell” yourself, share what you know and pass it on to others
- open up new opportunities, add interpersonal skills
- develop an open mind, understand the issues and identify new uses
- create connections, avoid silos and encourage multidisciplinarity
As part of this program, the FMJH is organizing 2 events:

Individual follow-up committee (CSI)
Establishment representatives are the key contacts for the scientific and pedagogical follow-up of EDMH doctoral students. In addition to their thesis supervisors, they carry out the following tasks:
- information,
- guidance,
- advice on training courses (disciplinary or complementary),
- follow-up of the candidate's training plan/portfolio,
- support and incentives.
Each doctoral student will be monitored throughout his or her thesis by an Individual Follow-up Committee (CSI).
Composition of the CSI: each ISC must include at least one “specialist” in the doctoral student's research field (from outside the supervising team) and one “non-specialist” from outside the research field. The composition of the ISC can be proposed by the doctoral student or by the doctoral school. EDMH recommends that at least one member of the ISC should be an ED official (deputy director or establishment representative). The composition of the ISC must be entered on ADUM in the 1st year. One member of the ISC must be declared as the referent; by default, this will be an EDMH representative.
CSI report: interviews with the CSI are confidential and give rise to a report which is sent to the doctoral student and thesis director. Each year, the CSI report containing a favorable opinion is required for re-registration. This report must be included in the re-registration file.
In addition to the follow-up meetings detailed below, doctoral students can contact EDMH representatives (deputy director of the pole, establishment representative, director) at any time, should they have any questions or problems.
Specific follow-up actions are detailed below, and include an annual meeting with the CSI.
First-year interview
Between June and October, all doctoral students will have an interview (20-30 minutes) with their CSI before re-enrolling in their 2nd year. During this interview, the doctoral student will present the progress of his or her research since the start of the thesis, and the prospects for the following year. In advance of the interview, they will provide their CSI with a written activity report, as well as a list of training courses attended. During the interview, he/she can also mention any problems that may have arisen. The CSI will assess the doctoral student's situation after 1 year of thesis and can advise him/her on the progress of his/her thesis
Second-year doctoral students'days
Towards the end of the 2nd year of their thesis (May-June), doctoral students are invited to present their work to their laboratory or research team during a presentation session. In addition to disseminating doctoral students' work internally, this presentation will enable them to check on the progress of their thesis work, and to give advice on the quality of their presentation. These sessions are followed by an interview with the ISC. During this interview, the progress of the thesis, the prospects for the end of the thesis, and even for the post-thesis period, will be discussed, as well as the list of training courses taken. A report will also be drawn up.
Mid-third-year interview and beyond
Between January and April of their third year, the ISC will meet with doctoral students to discuss thesis completion procedures (including content and writing), current applications and career prospects. In the event of a request for an extension beyond December 31, the ISC must give a favorable opinion before the doctoral student can re-enroll in 4th year. A similar interview will then take place during the 4th year.
Additional doctoral missions
Subject to the usual agreements of the thesis directors, laboratory director, doctoral school management committee, a doctoral contract may include a complementary doctoral mission (also called Monitorat or service 1/6-th), see the ministry’s website, one of the following four types:
- Teaching assignment as part of a teaching team, for a service equal to one-third of the annual teaching reference service of teachers and researchers (64 h EQTD)
- Mission for the dissemination of scientific and technical information exploitation of scientific and technical research results
- Expert assessment carried out in a company, a local authority, an administration, a public institution, an association or a foundation, using the principle of the «doctoral consultant»
Travelling for training
The FMJH supports the EDMH through two funding programs for "traveling for research training":

Contribution to the funding of international research stays lasting one to two months for PhD students, as part of the Junior Scientific Visibility Program.

Contribution to the funding of PhD students' participation in events with high doctoral training content, such as summer/winter schools, as part of the Vivaldi Program for doctoral Training

The EDMH Welcome Day
A doctoral students' day, open to all EDMH doctoral students, is organized in October each year, usually at IHES. Attendance is highly recommended, especially for first-year PhD students, and a buffet is provided.
Presentations are devoted to the EDMH curriculum, as well as to scientific presentations by teams from EDMH's host laboratories, to promote better understanding of the various partners and the cohesion of EDMH.
