    Additional doctoral missions

Subject to the usual agreements of the thesis directors, laboratory director, doctoral school management committee, a doctoral contract may include a complementary doctoral mission (also called Monitorat or service 1/6-th), see the ministry’s website, one of the following four types:

    • Teaching assignment as part of a teaching team, for a service equal to one-third of the annual teaching reference service of teachers and researchers (64 h EQTD)
    • Mission for the dissemination of scientific and technical information exploitation of scientific and technical research results
    • Expert assessment carried out in a company, a local authority, an administration, a public institution, an association or a foundation, using the principle of the «doctoral consultant»

Teaching activities may be carried out at another institution, following the establishment of an agreement with the institution that signed the doctoral contract.

Following the Decree of August 29, 2016, setting the amount of remuneration for doctoral students on contract, for doctoral contracts beginning after September 1, 2016, an additional 64-hour doctoral assignment increases the amount (2016 figures) of a doctoral contract funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research from €1,758 gross in 2016 (approximately €1,420 net per month) to €1,969 gross in 2016 (approximately €1,600 net per month). For doctoral students on contracts funded outside the ministry's budget (research contracts, grants from the Ile-de-France region, foundations, Labex, Idex, etc.), the base amount is set by the funding body. This new ministerial decree on doctoral training provides for the possibility of adjusting the number of hours, but this flexibility varies depending on the institution.

Applications and recruitment for teaching assistantships are not managed by the EDMH, but by each of the institutions offering teaching assistantships, according to their own procedures. It is possible to apply while working on your thesis. The procedure generally takes place after the thesis funding allocation procedure, i.e. around the end of June and beginning of July. However, it is important to find out more in advance. Even if some funding (such as specific allowances for students at the École Normale Supérieure) is allocated to institutions that have signed the doctoral contract with a guarantee of financial support for teaching assistantships, it is important to apply.
