Hong Wang - Fields Medal 2026

The FMJH would like to extend its warmest congratulations to Hong Wang on her resounding success. Beyond Hong Wang’s personal merit and extraordinary talent—which have been recognized in this way—the awarding of this medal carries several powerful symbolic meanings. A woman has been awarded the Fields Medal today, and this is only the third time in history. This woman is Chinese, and this is the first time that this nationality will appear on the list of recipients of this award.

Finally, on a smaller scale—and although the FMJH played only a minor role in this exceptional achievement—it notes with genuine pleasure that Hong Wang, a professor at the IHES, was in 2013–2014 both an engineering student at the École Polytechnique and a master’s student in arithmetic, analysis, and geometry at what was then still the University of Paris-Sud.

At the same time, she had been selected to receive an FMJH Excellence Scholarship. For the mathematics community at the Paris-Saclay Campus and the FMJH, which serves it, this success also symbolizes a shared commitment to welcoming, training, and supporting talented individuals from around the world, in a spirit of openness and humanism that endures—and whose fruits we are now reaping.
